Does a criminal record prevent me from fostering?

Whilst having a criminal record does not necessarily stop you from becoming a foster carer, by law there are types of criminal offences such as offences against children, sexual offences or violent crimes that would likely disqualify you from being able to foster. Therefore, minor offences should not count against you in your application to foster.

It is imperative that all criminal convictions are disclosed when you apply to us as one of the initial checks that takes place when you apply to be a foster carer is a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This check will be undertaken on anyone in your household who is over the age of 18.

Any previous convictions or cautions will be explored with you during the assessment process and a comprehensive risk assessment will be undertaken to ensure that the right decision is made regarding your suitability as a foster carer.
